Go Out On A Limb

To go out on a limb, means that you are doing something that has inherent risk, but that you believe in.

The logo: generally speaking trees don’t grow on the edge of cliffs due to the lack of nutrients in the soil, and the extreme conditions. This tree is different - motivated, strong, capable. Like this tree, you too are capable of growing where you want and living the life that you’re always dreaming of.

the story

Behind the company: I (Justin) started an apparel brand a few years ago called On A Limb Apparel, with the goal of motivating people to get out of their comfort zones, take risks, and try new things.

I moved to Denver, Colorado on a whim after graduating college and started On A Limb as a passion project.

Most of my personal growth has come from adventures and the outdoors and I started OAL as a way to help others grow in a similar manner.
A few of the experiences that shaped who I am and my outlook on life include:
  • The summer between my 5th and 6th grade of elementary school, my family spent two months in a camper traveling across the United States. We started in Virginia and made our way to California, and back. We lived off of the grid for two months, spending 3-10 days at campgrounds before moving to the next campground. We visited national parks, explored nature, hiked / biked / and enjoyed campfires every night. Because of this, campfires bring me more joy than Netflix or Youtube and I have a hard time staying in one place for very long - I like experiencing and finding new things to explore.
  • When I was 15 my dad, brother, and I went to a rodeo school (Sankey Rodeo School) where we learned how to ride bulls, for 'fun' might I add. With only a three hour lesson, I was on the back of the first bull, scared out of my brain in the chute. I learned that no matter how scary something is, odds are that you can survive for eight seconds - long enough to figure out a way out of the situation.
  • I went skydiving for my 18th birthday. I realized how incredible the world looks from a bird's eye view and that freefalling is an absolute rush.
  • Driving a racecar taught me to go as fast as you can, so long as you won't completely lose control.
  • Going dirt biking in Moab, Utah with only a 5 minute lesson on how to dirt bike in the parking lot taught me that I learn quickly and can apply new knowledge to situations. It also taught me that life can be more fun when you don't overthink.
While I don't think that everyone needs to do life-threatening, wild, or intense things, I do attribute these activities and opportunities as incredibly impactful in my growth and personal development. I think that trying new things shows what you're truly capable of. Meeting new people gives you a wider view of the world and more understanding of other cultures and people.
Because of this, my goal has always been to start a nonprofit to help others explore more. That said, starting one is difficult so I’m starting by giving to a nonprofit that aligns with my mission.
The most important thing to me is making enough money to be able to help others achieve their goals and dreams. I think the most impactful way of doing that is through veering from your comfort zone and trying new experiences, pushing yourself, and learning what you truly are capable of.
